Subject: What trails?

Well, this message board gets pretty bland in the Winter, so I guess it's up to me to "stir
the pot". Every time I get my monthly mag from IMBA, I can't help but think, "Yeah, it's
O.K. what they're doing for mtn. biking and all, but why in the hell do we need an "inter-
national organization" to (mainly) fight for trail access rights. I mean, don't we already
own the national forests? Who has the right to say that certain trails can only be used
for this and that, but not the other? It doesn't make sense when you think about it. Even
on the trails that allow mtn biking, who ends up doing all the clearing of treefall every Spring? It certainly isn't the forest service (not that I've seen, anyway!). I liked it better in
the "old days". When I started mtn biking, there was no such thing as an "off limit" trail.
There simply was a trail, and you rode it. And there was non of this "trail manners" either.
You just blew by hikers like they were standing still. By the time they knew what hit them,
you were long gone! You know this trail access issue is mostly political whe they allow
horses on trails but not bicycles. I mean, have you ever riden a popular horse trail during
the rainy season (like now). Those hoves put divits in the mud that are 3-6" deep, over and
over. Not to mention trying to ride around the "piles". As far as I know, (most) mtn bikers
don't crap in the middle of the trail. And they don't weigh 600-1,000 pounds. I just got through writing an e mail to IMBA. I said the solution to trail access is easy. I'll just do
what we've been doing for 25 years, which is to put on the night gear and go out at 2am.
Never had a problem!

"That dude sounds like a total douchebag! With almost 7billion people on this planet this asshat is worried about what mountain biking does!. Sound like a case of we need to take this guy around back good ole country boy style. Effing idiot!"

Thu, Dec 3, 2009:

You're not willing to compromise. You're just looking for excuses as to why mountain biking should be banned from the trails it was born on. So, you can keep your extreme view going, while the rest of us will simply use good ol' civil disobedience and not respect those unjust rules.

Rode and hiked Soaring Eagle over the weekend, in the rain and wind.

With over 12 miles of maintained trails in the one square mile park

there's plenty of room to wander and roam. Though I was there in the

rain I was pleasantly surprised by how little mud there was. I was

expecting a quagmire but only ran across isolated puddles.

With over 12 miles of trails available, this is a fun network of tight

and twisty trail. There are 18 named trails so many ride variations are

possible. On the trails themselves you will encounter roots, rocks,

logs, and mud. Some of the trails here can get extremely wet and muddy

in winter and spring.

All in all had a great time at Soaring Eagle, for a low country

excursion it was a good outing. And since it's so close to Seattle,

I didn't have to drive far to get there!

Subject: Duthie Parking Situation

Quick update based on a meeting with King County yesterday...

The great news is that Duthie's popularity is far exceeding our expectations. The bad news is that we don't have enough parking for everybody on weekends. I met with KC yesterday and they are working hard to find parking solutions for Duthie...

1. ASAP: Going to expand the existing crushed rock parking area at the Lodge. Going to go as big as they can while staying under the permit threshold.

2. Trying to purchase adjacent properties from 2 landowners. If either goes through, the problem is solved, but it would obviously still take a while to get it permitted and built.

3. Working with the LDS church for special event parking. Awesome!

4. If 2. fails, seek 2010 funding to find an alternative solution off of Issaquah-Fall City Rd (e.g. would take a traffic study, some traffic modifications and some roadside clearing to be able to turn the maintenance access road into a safe public access road).

In the meantime, please park respectfully...

* The south maintenance access road and parking in the clearing is for builders and volunteers attending work parties only.

* Carpool whenever you can (use the Highlands P&R -- just 5-10 min drive)

* Park visitors should park at the Lodge (north side) -- park close together on weekends (if you're meeting a buddy and you can't carpool, park end-to-end so we can fit more cars - the spots are deep enough)

* If it's full, park at Endeavor Elementary School -- it's less than a 10 minute ride to the park from there.

* Please don't park beside the park entrances off of Duthie Hill Rd and Issaquah-Fall City Rd. The county will be putting up no parking signs soon.

Please spread the word! Thanks a ton!

I must have written unclearly. I'm pretty sure I didn't suggest that wasting ones yime dithering was the sole reason for lack of trail access in the east bay. The main problem is moron managers. However , when trying to influence managers wasting your yime and energy blathering about dickless suck asses like Larry minikes is a significant drain on energy better spent on real advocacy work like you have planned. I won't be there because I do all my trail work and meetings etc., where I ride, Marin, where advocates who know and can remember who's who in the hater community waste no time on shag heads like minikes other than to join Marin land managers in eye rolling when the nut starts lying and raving. The best policy for these wad loads is to ignore them entirely, always take the high road, and present land managers with rTional, honest, calmly delivered ideas and plans that aren't easy to refute like shangle heads like berto, minikes, luzmore, vandeman, et al. Every mountain biker should know their enemies and ignore them when they have rendered themselves meaningless in the process by

I guess we can also bemoan the fact that cancer hasn't been cured because of Tweeter. But I'm not sure it would be factual. Wikipedia's explanation of peer review ;

"Peer review (also known as refereeing) is the process of subjecting an author's scholarly work, research, or ideas to the scrutiny of others who are experts in the same field. Peer review requires a community of experts in a given (and often narrowly defined) field, who are qualified and able to perform impartial review. Impartial review, especially of work in less narrowly defined or inter-disciplinary fields, may be difficult to accomplish; and the significance (good or bad) of an idea may never be widely appreciated among its contemporaries. Although generally considered essential to academic quality, peer review has been criticized as ineffective, slow, and misunderstood."

What's most amazing about this and a number of other antibike communiqués is the place in which, in the midst of an antibike polemic, the author insists he's/she's a mountain biker. Typically, this author writes that "[a]s an avid mountain biker .. . ." he can't stand bikes on trails. Indeed, as an avid mountain biker the author happens to hate mountain biking. Talk about weird.

It's not really NIMBY, by the way. It's more NOT ANYWHERE.

The "lack of scientific studies" is a particularly egregious lie, as is, I suspect, the "avid mountain biker" statement.

A recent New York Times article entitled "Growth in Mountain Biking May Put Western Trails Off Limits" (October 10), reports that the National Forest Service is working on a major policy revision that shall place thousands of miles of narrow trails off limits to mountain biking. The Forest Service is now finally echoing exactly what the environmental and conservation community in Marin has been saying for over two decades; mountain biking does have a detrimental effect on the environment, far greater than that caused by hiking and equestrian activities.

Let¹s clear up some ongoing misinformation. Contrary to what the IMBA-led mountain biking lobby has been claiming, there are no valid scientific studies concerning the impact of mountain biking on trails and specifically, none showing the impact on Marin's fragile ecosystem. They quote poor-quality, biased studies that are neither peer reviewed nor published.

From a land management perspective, they are no more than junk science. Nor is the issue about sharing as has been claimed. Conservation, protection and safety is our ongoing focus. Now their house of cards is collapsing as evidence mounts that mountain biking on most narrow trails negatively impacts ecosystems.

On November 3, at 1:30 p.m. the Board of Supervisors is sponsoring a trails "workshop." Don't be fooled by the name. This is yet another attempt by Supervisors McGlashan and Kinsey to give away our lands to their favorite lobby. This runs contrary to the wishes of the vast majority of the citizens who have overwhelmingly said in every poll that they want our lands protected and current trails designations to be maintained.

As an avid mountain biker, I know there is an abundance of biking

opportunities in this wonderful county. It is sad, in a county of such great beauty and resources that it feels like the 1800¹s where we are at the mercy of the selfish, short-sided interests of a few who lack long-term vision.

The recent Ken Burns series on PBS on creating our National Parks shows the vital importance great leaders played in protecting our lands. Thank God for people like John Muir, Teddy Roosevelt and other great environmentalists who stood up to the powerful special interests of the day. Imagine where we would be without them.

The battleground shifts but the fight remains the same. Now our generation must continue to defend the giveaway of our public lands by politicians. The battle to protect Marin from the damage mountain biking causes continues growing in seriousness due to the cumulative effects of the sport. Please attend this critical meeting at the Marin Center, Manzanita Room, Avenue of the Flags, rear parking lot and make your voice be heard.

Yeah, it was full contact, face to rock, says Vanessa Murphy, sporting a shiner that elicits respect from other mountain bikers.

Cool. Nice, echoes Araxi waiter Andrew, displaying his own scabby road rash.

Mike,

I don't really understand your anger and your bile.   As far as safety goes, cheerleading is much more dangerous than mountain biking.  As far as Walker Creek, it will not fit 500 families and so it was not worth pursuing.   Don't give yourself so much credit.  It is unfortunate for a person of your obvious talents and passion to be so short sighted and close minded.  Did you learn that at Berkeley or Harvard?  You call me a liar and you never even give my kids a chance show you anything.  I gave you an opportunity to show leadership and you chose to rant.   I don't know why anyone would send you any kind of threats.  You are far too easy to marginalize.  The sad part is that you have some good ideas but you have an appalling knack for attack when level headed conversation would suffice.  I do wish you luck with your activities.   Remember, animals become extinct not through loss of habitat but ultimately from not being able to adapt.

Here's an honest answer:

I used to ride my bicycle on the former dairy ranch roads in Point Reyes National Seashore since about 1972 (it was a sturdy, cheap ten-speed, before there were so-called "mountain bikes"). I think, at this time, the Phillip Burton Wilderness there had just been created, but there were no "no bikes" signs at the time. These ranch roads have since been re-named "trails." After I got a fat tire "mountain bike" I continued to ride the "trails" there before AND AFTER the "no bikes" signs went up about 1984. Point Reyes does not conform to the phony notion of "wilderness." I have absolutely NO respect for this B.S. Supposedly some of the ranchers logged their properties before turning them over to the feds. This area had been grazed by cows to the point that it does not in any way conform to the so-called "primeval" definition in the Wilderness Act, which also specifies ROAD-LESS areas!

In Marin, ALL of us used to ride on closed trails since the late 70's, early 80's, because there were no "no bikes" signs on the trails, but we didn't know it was, technically, illegal. This was the case in MMWD, Mt. Tam State Park, etc. We ALL kept riding those trails after the "no bikes" signs went up. I was cite once in MMWD lands and paid my fine, I think it was 30 - 40 bucks or something. Later, we just rode the trails at night, mostly really late by moonlight with minimal lights. We shrouded our "Night Sun" and "Tam Torch" lights to minimize side light spillage, always turning them off in the open when the moon was bright enough. It's been about 15 - 16 years since I've done any of that.

Also, I am disgusted by mountain bikers who were cited by rangers in Point Reyes a couple years ago, made a big deal about it, went to court, were convicted and DID NOT APPEAL! Of course the lower court is going to convict! You have to go to the next step! Yes, mountain bikers are LAZY sometimes, right, Mike?

Since moving to Idaho I have never ridden a bicycle on a Wilderness trail, but once I accidentally rode my bike down an unsigned trail that intersected with a "closed to bikes" trail, also unsigned until you get to the entrance, on Sun Valley Company property. Oops. Actually, I hardly ride the thing at all any more, having rediscovered my roots as a hiker and backpacker who likes to walk off-trail a lot.

I leave you with this quote from Dr. Valerius Geist, Professor Emeritus of Environmental Science, The University of Calgary,
Calgary, Alberta, Canada.:

"...The “wilderness fallacy”. To round out the list of fallacies, the wilderness fallacy must be quickly dealt with. It is another North American introduction into global culture. It is based on the conventional wisdom that pre-Colombian America was a virgin wilderness with very few natives, which practiced a wise ecologically sustainable lifestyle - a patronizing picture of indigenous people as noble savages if there ever was one. The Archeological record teaches otherwise, namely, that the Americas - as were all continents inhabited by humans - were fully utilized by sophisticated cultures and regionally dense populations. When European diseases and genocide rapidly diminished native populations, and the heavy hand of red man came off the land and led to an explosion of “wilderness”. This wilderness was in turn subdued beginning about 250 years later by the even heavier hand of white man. Wilderness in the North American context is an artifact of European colonization. There is no such thing as a continent- wide pre-Colombian American wilderness. To automatically invoke “wilderness” values is much like invoking “ecosystems” values. In reality this requires some very Socratic questioning and debate, whether “wilderness” should be spread in “multi-use landscapes surrounding houses, farms, villages and cities”! ..." from his paper, "When do Wolves Become Dangerous to Humans?"

I find this discussion hilarious and the virulence of the anti-bike is funny. I have ridden Hundreds of miles of designated wilderness trails, and the idea that I am damaging the experience or trail is ridiculous. Anyone who has had to hike after a horse train has been through a trail knows this is basically just a couple of groups of people being exclusionary as a horse train contains huge amounts of "mechanized" items into the area and damage the trail and environment by their very nature. I am not anti-horse and recognize the work that many horse activists and groups have done for the trail system, I just want to bring a little reality to the situation. The very nature of where the trails are precludes any idea of actually policing any regulation limiting access to these difficult to reach places and I welcome the attempt as our resources are stretched thin and this is way down the priority list so this is a moot point for me. I look forward to enjoying the wilderness in any way I can get my big ass there.

No, the border will be outside of the ski areas i'm sure.

This is terrible news, i know Oregon area riders worked really hard to keep access.  Reach out a hand in trust and stabbed in the back.  i remember thinking a few years back that the negotiations of mt. bikers working with Wilderness proponents in the Mt. Hood area, making corridors was a bit risky, but a glimmering hope of keeping access with Wilderness Designation.

So much for honest cooperation.

Wow, i guess i'm not too surprised, but really disappointed at the broken promises.

Just say NO to Wilderness period.

Redbox to Switzers

As I came around a corner, fairly slow (7-10mph), I had to do a small skid to avoid some hikers that didn't seem to comprehend the phrase "multi-use trail". I stopped about 4 feet from them which is plenty of room. They said, "you scared the hell out of us!". I often wonder if a lot of the hikers don't exaggerate a bit. I know that it must be scary seeing a guy in full gear, sliding towards you on a bike, but I was going pretty slow and in full control. I have come to the conclusion that there are inevitably always going to be hikers of the activist variety that hate anything that travels on two wheels. So, I'll continue to be as polite as possible, have a great time on my rides, and not worry too much about offending the militant hiker types. There aren't very many things in this world that scare the hell out of me.
